Proud Boy Missing Ahead of January 6 Sentencing: FBI Launches Search

Proud Boys member convicted in connection with Capitol attack goes missing

Christopher Worrell, a member of the far-right extremist group Proud Boys, who was convicted of seven charges related to his actions during the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, is now missing, according to court records and the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

“We are interested in hearing from any members of the public who might have information regarding Mr. Worrell’s whereabouts,” said Patty Hartman, a spokesperson for the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

The FBI has issued a wanted poster for Worrell, stating that he “violated conditions of release pending sentencing.” The poster also mentions that a federal arrest warrant was issued for him in the United States District Court, District of Columbia, Washington, D.C., on August 15, 2023.

Worrell, who had been under house arrest in Florida, had become a cause célèbre in right-wing circles due to his health issues while in jail. He claimed that officials had been negligent in providing him with medical treatment for a broken finger and that he had contracted Covid-19 while in jail. Worrell is also diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

His sentencing, which was scheduled for Friday, was canceled, and a bench warrant for his arrest was issued instead. Federal prosecutors had sought a 14-year sentence for Worrell, according to the government’s sentencing memorandum.

“Worrell was found guilty, after a bench trial in which he perjured himself, of assaulting a group of police officers with a deadly and dangerous weapon in order to thwart Congress’s certification of the 2020 electoral vote and the peaceful transition of power,” wrote prosecutors in the memorandum.

The FBI is urging anyone with information on Worrell’s whereabouts to contact their local FBI office or the nearest American embassy or consulate.
