Suspect Dead After Shooting at Hospital in Portland
Police in Oregon have reported that a suspect is dead after opening fire in a hospital in downtown Portland on Saturday. The shooting left one person dead and another injured. The suspect, who fled the Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center after the shooting, was stopped in a vehicle by police in Gresham, just east of Portland. He was shot and killed by officers, according to a news release from the Portland police.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. local time when police responded to reports of a person with a gun inside the hospital. Sgt. Kevin Allen stated at a news conference that when officers arrived, they were informed that the suspected shooter had already left the hospital. Authorities later located the suspect and stopped the vehicle he was in.
During the incident, shots were fired by police, resulting in the death of the suspect. No officers were injured. The police department release states that three officers used deadly force in this incident. Their identities will be made public within 15 days, according to bureau policy.
Bobby Smallwood, a security guard at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center, was shot and killed during the incident. Another staff member, who remains unnamed, was injured but is in stable condition. Thankfully, no patients were hurt in the shooting.
Following the incident, a nearby Fred Meyer grocery store was evacuated and searched by police as part of an intensive search for the suspect. The hospital was also put on lockdown but lifted its shelter-in-place directive later in the day.
The suspect’s motive remains unknown, and the police have not released his name. The Portland Police Homicide Unit, along with detectives from other units and the Forensic Evidence Division, are currently investigating the incident.
Legacy Health’s president and CEO, Kathryn Correia, expressed profound grief over the incident and offered support to the loved ones of Bobby Smallwood and all those affected by the shooting.
