The city of Khmelnytskyi in Ukraine plans to install four cogeneration units by the end of the year, funded by foreign donors, to generate its own electricity. The city already has 15 such units across 12 of its 75 boiler houses which together generate 7.5 MW of power, increasing to 8 MW after the installation of the new units. This allows the Khmelnytskyi Heat and Power Company to be fully self-sufficient in electricity, with a third of the power being sold on the energy market, improving the stability of Ukraine’s power system. More electricity generation in the city also means less heat energy will need to be transported from large thermal, hydro, and nuclear power plants. The city’s boiler houses are also equipped with diesel or petrol generators to ensure heating supply for residents.
