On September 17, Ukraine celebrated Rescuer’s Day, honoring the efforts of emergency responders who deal with disasters, put out fires, clear rubble, save individuals from dangerous situations, and disarm explosive objects. The city of Khmelnytskyi especially recognized its rescue workers, with the city’s mayor, Oleksandr Symchyshyn, presenting the responders with a special firefighting vehicle and 236 specialized helmets. Many rescuers were lauded for their bravery and awarded by the State Emergency Service. Notably, Oleksandr Zhuk, a physical education teacher, was honored by Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky for saving two drowning teenagers in June.
