The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, has passed a law regulating religious organizations that have a headquarters in Russia, effectively banning the activities of the pro-Russian Orthodox Church of Ukraine (UOC-MP). The law, which was signed by the president on Independence Day, was supported by 265 MPs. However, despite the UOC-MP’s claims of independence from the Russian Orthodox Church, independent experts note continued ties. The law gives the UOC-MP nine months to sever all ties with Moscow. Since the start of the full-scale war, 685 churches have transferred to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), and over 100 UOC-MP priests are under criminal investigation.
