TL/DR –

A new private-public coalition called Solarize the Triad aims to expand solar energy usage in the region through community outreach and group purchasing of materials and services. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 allows local governments and nonprofits to access tax credits for solar installations, a move that the Piedmont Environmental Alliance calls a game changer. The coalition also aims to help community groups generate their own power through solar installations on their buildings and involves large regional agencies and community-based organizations in the effort.

Solarize the Triad Aims to Boost Solar Energy Use in the Region

A new public-private coalition, Solarize the Triad, is fostering an increase in solar energy consumption in the Triad region through community engagement and group procurement of solar materials and services.

As per Will Eley, Green Jobs Program Manager at the Piedmont Environmental Alliance, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has empowered local governments and nonprofits with access to tax credits for solar installations, marking a significant milestone in sustainable energy initiatives. However, the technical and bureaucratic complexities can deter many from fully leveraging these benefits.

“The paperwork and technology can be quite overwhelming, even for experienced individuals. Therefore, an integral part of our campaign is to simplify and alleviate these apprehensions, instilling further confidence in individuals,” Eley explains.

The program enables community groups to produce their own electricity using solar installations on their premises. Prominent regional nonprofits like the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina and community-centric organizations such as Winston-Salem’s Boston-Thurmond United are actively participating in this initiative.
