Jasdeep Singh Degun, a British musician, has become the first sitar player to win a Royal Philharmonic Society Award, which he described as “an absolute honour.” Singh Degun, who was named the best instrumentalist at the prestigious classical music ceremony, also composed and featured in Orpheus, a new version of Monteverdi’s Orfeo that merges Indian and Western classical music. In 2022, his debut album Anomaly was released on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records. Other winners at the event included Scottish tenor Nicky Spence, the London Symphony Orchestra’s principal guest conductor François-Xavier Roth, and the Ukrainian opera Chornobyldorf. The award ceremony was held in Manchester, marking the first time in the RPS event’s 35-year history it was held outside London.
