Suspect wasn’t arrested for stabbing

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has released a statement to clarify why Don Steven McDougal was not initially arrested for a stabbing incident that occurred last year. McDougal, who is currently charged with capital murder in connection with the death of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham, had been implicated in a separate stabbing case. The victim in the stabbing case had initially identified the wrong perpetrator, leading to the arrest of an innocent man. Two weeks after the wrongful arrest, the victim identified McDougal as the actual stabber. Despite this, charges were dismissed as the victim was deemed an unreliable witness. McDougal later admitted to the stabbing during a police interview related to Audrii’s disappearance.
