TL/DR –

Kevin Monahan has been found guilty of second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Kaylin Gillis, who accidentally drove into his driveway. Monahan claimed he believed his property was under siege by intruders and the shooting was a result of a defective gun. Despite his claims, the jury also convicted him of reckless endangerment and tampering with physical evidence.

Upstate NY Man Found Guilty of Second-Degree Murder

New York resident Kevin Monahan, 66, was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis. Gillis and her friends accidentally entered Monahan’s driveway while seeking another house, leading to Monahan shooting her.

Monahan was also convicted for reckless endangerment and tampering with physical evidence. This incident occurred just days after the shooting of 16-year-old Ralph Yarl in Kansas City, who was shot by an elderly man when he mistakenly went to the wrong door.

The Night of Gillis’ Death

On the tragic night, Gillis and her friends were traveling in a convoy when they mistakenly turned into Monahan’s driveway near Hebron, north of Albany. They attempted to leave upon realizing their mistake. Monahan reacted by firing his shotgun from his porch, critically injuring Gillis.

“His action was driven by anger. He recklessly fired at them within 90 seconds of their arrival,” said Assistant District Attorney Christian Morris.

The Trial

During the short trial, Monahan and his lawyer claimed the shooting was accidental due to a faulty gun. Monahan defended himself by alleging he felt his home was under siege when the vehicles approached and his subsequent gunshot was unintentional.

Prosecutors presented evidence showing Monahan claimed to have been sleeping when police arrived later that night. Gillis’ father, Andrew Gillis, has remembered his daughter as a person who loved animals and aspired to be a marine biologist or veterinarian.
