California Gov. Newsom promises to veto ban on youth tackle football

California Governor Gavin Newsom opposes banning youth tackle football, vowing to veto a proposed bill that would gradually increase the age limit for the sport. Assembly Bill 734 proposes to stop children aged six or younger from playing tackle football from 2023, increasing the age limit to 10 by 2027 and 12 by 2029. Newsom says an outright ban is not the solution, instead calling for cooperation with the Legislature, the bill’s author, health and sports medicine experts, coaches, parents, and community members to enhance safety in youth football. A study published two years ago in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found no link between youth tackle football and cognitive or behavioral problems. However, a 2017 JAMA study found that 21% of high school football players had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease connected to head traumas.
