Yuma Farmers Benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act, Boosting Sustainable Agriculture Practices

YUMA (3TV/CBS 5) – It has been a year since the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) was signed into law, providing $40 billion in funding for farms and rural communities across the United States. The primary objective of this legislation is to ensure a stable food supply while addressing the impact of agriculture on climate change.

According to Charlene Fernandez, the USDA state director, the IRA has already begun to yield positive results. The allocated funds are enabling farmers to expand their operations in a sustainable manner. Fernandez emphasizes the importance of ensuring that the food supply is grown safely and reaches consumers’ tables without any risks.

Yuma, known as one of the leading winter vegetable producers in the country, is already implementing sustainable practices. However, Valentin Sierra from Amigo Farms believes that the grant money from the IRA will enable them to adopt even more efficient techniques. Sierra explains that the funds would facilitate the use of advanced technology for leveling the ground, thus reducing water usage during irrigation. Additionally, they could switch from sprinkler irrigation to drip tape, a method that directs water directly to the crop’s roots, ultimately conserving water resources.

The scarcity of water poses a significant challenge for farmers, as its price continues to rise. Sierra expresses concern that this could force some growers out of business. Dr. Ethan Orr, the University of Arizona’s economic development director, supports Sierra’s statement, revealing that several farms in Pinal County would have already closed down if it weren’t for the IRA program. He emphasizes that when a farm shuts down, it leaves behind fallow fields that produce dust, negatively impacting the environment.

Driven by research, Dr. Orr and his team at the University of Arizona collaborate closely with farmers across the state to enhance their farming practices. In the Yuma Valley, most farmers already operate at 90% efficiency. Dr. Orr emphasizes the importance of supporting farmers to ensure both a stable food supply and a healthy environment.

As the Inflation Reduction Act continues to support sustainable agriculture practices in Yuma and other rural communities, it is crucial to recognize the positive impact this funding has had on farmers. By investing in advanced technology and efficient irrigation methods, farmers can combat climate change and maintain a secure food supply. The success of this program serves as a testament to the importance of supporting and prioritizing sustainable farming practices.
