Public Servant Launches Campaign for Democratic Nomination in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District

Public servant Chris Glasser has announced his campaign seeking the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s 4th Congressional District in 2024. The seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, a Republican from Zeeland. Glasser, who works as a children services specialist for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, is joining attorney Jessica Swartz from Kalamazoo and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Joseph Alfonso of Holland in seeking the Democratic nomination in 2024.

Glasser has a background in criminal justice, having studied the subject at Western Michigan University. He also has experience as an EMT, firefighter, and reserve sheriff’s deputy. In a statement, Glasser emphasized the importance of public servants acting with integrity and serving in the interest of the public. He believes politicians should be held to the same standard.

U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga has been serving in Congress since 2010, previously serving three terms in the Michigan House. Michigan’s 4th Congressional District represents Allegan and Van Buren counties in their entirety, as well as parts of Berrien, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, and Ottawa counties. According to Cook Political Report’s 2023 Partisan Voting Index Map and List, the district has a Republican lean with a rating of R+5.

This is not Glasser’s first attempt at running for the Democratic nomination in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District. He ran in 2022 but ended his campaign after failing to gather enough signatures in time for the ballot. Glasser’s current campaign is centered around the principles of social liberty and economic accountability. He believes individuals should have the freedom to live their lives as they see fit, as long as they are not harming others. Glasser also emphasizes the importance of companies considering the impact of their actions on workers, consumers, the environment, and the community.

Glasser’s campaign policies include advocating for the right to repair, addressing high healthcare costs, increasing transparency in government, supporting workers’ rights, defending civil rights, and protecting those rights against government overreach. In an interview with the Michigan Advance, Glasser expressed his interest in national politics, particularly in introducing a single-payer healthcare system. He believes that addressing systemic issues requires action at the federal level.

Glasser’s campaign is still in its early stages, but he is determined to bring his policy interests and commitment to public service to the national stage.
