Former President Donald Trump’s team is creating a legal defense fund to assist with the mounting legal bills faced by Trump and his associates. The fund, named the Patriot Legal Defense Fund Inc., will cover the expenses of current and former aides who have been involved in various investigations into the former president. It will be led by Trump associate and adviser Michael Glassner. The decision to establish this fund comes after Trump’s political action committee, Save America, has already spent over $40 million on legal fees for Trump and his associates since the beginning of 2023.
According to a spokesperson, the fund aims to protect innocent individuals associated with President Trump from financial ruin and prevent their lives from being completely destroyed. The spokesperson blamed the “weaponized Department of Justice” and special counsel Jack Smith for targeting these individuals. The legal defense fund will help pay for their legal fees and ensure they have representation against what they consider to be unlawful harassment.
The creation of the fund was first reported by The New York Times. This news comes after Smith filed new charges against Trump, his aide Walt Nauta, and a third defendant, Carlos De Oliveira. The charges allege that Trump mishandled classified documents after leaving the White House and that he and his employees attempted to delete Mar-a-Lago security footage sought by the grand jury. Both Nauta and De Oliveira are being represented by attorneys paid for by Trump’s operation.
In addition to these charges, Trump is also facing more than 30 counts related to business fraud from a Manhattan grand jury indictment earlier this year. He may also face potential charges in the special counsel’s grand jury investigation into the events leading up to the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, as well as an investigation by the Fulton County district attorney’s office in Georgia regarding attempts to overturn the state’s 2020 presidential election result.
