Uplift Harris program to move forward

The Uplift Harris program, designed to provide $500 a month for 18 months to families living in poverty, will proceed after a judge denied a temporary injunction that would have blocked it. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo called it an “important victory” and said the state’s case against the program had “no merit at all.” The state had sued the county over the program, calling it unconstitutional and an abuse of public funds. The county argued the program provides both social and economic benefits to the community. However, there remains uncertainty as the state can appeal this ruling, potentially delaying the program’s scheduled start on April 24.
