Will SpotSpotter Stay Through Summer? Mayor Won’t Say As Contract Expires Friday

The Mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, announced this week that use of the gunshot detection technology, ShotSpotter, would be briefly extended until September before being terminated. However, with the company’s current contract ending on Friday, it is uncertain whether ShotSpotter’s parent company, SoundThinking, will agree to a short-term extension. ShotSpotter has been utilised in Chicago since 2012 and has been criticised for its effectiveness and contribution to over-policing. The current contract with ShotSpotter is worth $49 million and has been renewed twice.
