Whit Merrifield and the Philadelphia Phillies finalize a $8 million, 1-year contract

Whit Merrifield, a former player from the Toronto Blue Jays, has finalized a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies for $8 million. Merrifield, who is known for his versatility in playing multiple positions, had a .272 batting average, hit 11 home runs, and had 67 RBIs last season. He has led the American League three times with 201 stolen bases and he also topped the AL with 206 hits and 10 triples in 2019. Merrifield is expected to bring a solid right-handed bat off the bench as well as play in the outfield, filling in for left fielder Brandon Marsh who is currently out due to knee surgery. The player and Toronto declined his $18 million mutual option for 2024, allowing him to become a free agent.
