Wetsuit, flippers and car tire tubes were chosen by offenders to overcome the dangerous yew

Seven men attempted to swim across the Tisza River to reach Romania but were stopped by border guards. One of the men, from the Kyiv region, had organized his route through the river section, packing necessary documents and belongings in polyethylene and setting off for Tyachiv Oblast. He ignored the dangerous water levels in the Tisza and the fatalities of 20 previous swimmers. All detainees had paid ferrymen $4,000 for a safe boat ride, but were instead made to cross the river using inflatable car tubes. Protocols for breaking Article 204-1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses “Illegal crossing or attempted illegal crossing of the state border of Ukraine” were drawn up against the detainees.
