The Texas A&M University System has been placed on the “10 Worst Censors of 2024” list by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), a free-speech organization, due to several instances of stifling speech. These include a botched hiring process for a former “New York Times” Editor, a professor’s suspension for criticizing a Texas GOP leader, and the cancellation of drag shows on campus. The list also criticized the READER Act by state Rep. Jared Patterson, which sought to remove “sexually explicit” materials from school libraries. Additionally, FIRE highlighted issues at other universities related to the Israel-Hamas war, the raiding of a Kansas newspaper, and the suspension of a medical professor who spoke about COVID-19, public health, and sex differences in sports performance.
