San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has introduced four new microgrids to address the increased energy demand in Clairemont, Tierra Santa, Paradise, and Boulevard. The microgrids, which can function independently or together with the larger regional grid, offer a total storage capacity of approximately 39 megawatts and 180 megawatt-hours. SDG&E CEO, Caroline Winn, states that these microgrids will actively provide clean energy to the grid when required, enhancing energy resilience for critical facilities like fire stations, schools, and cooling centers. The microgrids, which use lithium iron phosphate battery cells and include safety and fire prevention measures, were approved by the California Public Utilities Commission in December 2021. They will be connected to the state energy market to help maintain a balanced energy supply throughout the state.
