San Diego port commissioner’s lawyer sues agency alleging retaliation

San Diego attorney Cory Briggs is suing the local government agency, alleging retaliation for comments he made about the agency’s assistant general counsel during a public meeting. Briggs had represented Port Commissioner Sandy Naranjo during her censure hearing and is seeking undisclosed damages for the port’s decision to investigate him. He claims this was an attempt to silence him and violated his rights to free expression, association, and criticism of government officials. The port has hired an outside firm to investigate Briggs’ claims. Port of San Diego Chair Frank Urtasun maintains the lawsuit is without merit and states the port will continue to uphold its legal obligation to investigate personnel matters.
