Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has called for the permanent elimination of the state’s grocery tax, a 1% levy that was temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pritzker described the tax as regressive and unnecessary, stating that even a small reduction in expenses can make a difference for families. Currently, at least 15 states, including Illinois, impose some form of sales tax on groceries. The proposal to eliminate the tax, which was part of Pritzker’s Fiscal Year 2022 budget, could potentially save shoppers up to $400 million, but it would need to go before lawmakers for approval. Pritzker also proposed an expanded child tax credit, purchasing and forgiving medical debt for hundreds of thousands of Illinoisans, and other new programs in his budget speech.
