Northwest Indiana residents demand protection from pollution at BP oil refinery

Residents of Northwest Indiana have demanded protection from pollution at a local BP oil refinery, following a power outage that led to evacuations and environmental concerns. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) hosted a public meeting to discuss the renewal of BP’s air license at their Whiting Oil Refinery, but the public used the opportunity to urge the IDEM to prevent future incidents. The BP refinery, the largest of its kind in the Midwest, was shut down due to a power outage on February 1, leading to road closures and the burning off excess product from oil stacks as a safety measure. BP has stated its commitment to safe and compliant operations at the refinery. The Environmental Protection Agency will review BP’s permit renewal within the next 45 days.
