Lesley Stahl, a correspondent for 60 Minutes, recently reported from Beijing and Shanghai on the invitation of U.S. Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns. Notably, this trip was unlike Stahl’s previous visits as she was not accompanied by a government minder. While surveillance was present, it was subtler than before, with no overt interference. Stahl revealed that the Chinese government had attempted to shut down some interviews with Chinese businesses. American companies were reluctant to speak with 60 Minutes, fearing repercussions both in China and from U.S. policymakers looking to enforce a tougher stance on China. Burns noted that the current economic situation is dictating decisions in China, with fears of foreign companies withdrawing and a desire for more stable conditions.
