House votes to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas : NPR

The House of Representatives has voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his alleged refusal to comply with border policy laws and breaching public trust. This marks the first time a cabinet member has been impeached since 1876, although it is unlikely that Mayorkas will be removed from his position as the Senate, controlled by the Democrats, is not expected to convict him. The impeachment fulfills a promise by House Republican lawmakers to their voter base and highlights the party’s focus on border security and immigration enforcement ahead of the 2024 elections. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the impeachment a “new low for House Republicans,” while President Biden condemned the vote as a “blatant act of unconstitutional partisanship.”
