The Highland Park resident, Gladys Ibanez Olea, has been charged with human trafficking for exploiting four immigrants. Olea arranged for their illegal immigration and promised safety, housing, and jobs but later took their money and identification, forcing them into labor to pay off a supposed debt. She also controlled their food intake by locking up the refrigerator and kitchen cabinets. With threats to their families’ lives and manipulation tactics such as giving a toddler cold baths, Olea kept them under control. The case was uncovered after a tip to the Highland Park Police, and Olea now faces charges of human trafficking and involuntary servitude.
