The Guaranteed Income Program in Harris County, Texas, targeting low-income households, will benefit just 2% of the over 82,000 applicants, according to county data. The program will provide selected households with a $500 monthly stipend and was funded by a $20.5 million grant from the American Rescue Plan Act. It follows a similar program in Austin, Texas, launched in 2022. Applicants will be informed by February 26, and the first payments will commence on April 3. However, the initiative has faced opposition, with State Senator Paul Bettencourt asking Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to declare the program unconstitutional.
