He was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and is retaining his functions and duties, with the deputy defense secretary on standby to take over if necessary. The White House, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and some Congress members were notified about Austin’s condition. Austin also traveled with both unclassified and classified communications systems to perform his job from the hospital.
