Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students have bounced back to pre-pandemic reading levels and have outperformed most large school districts in the U.S, according to a study by Harvard and Stanford. The study, known as the Education Recovery Scorecard, evaluated reading growth from 2019 to 2023 and found Illinois showed the most gains, with CPS ranking third among large districts. However, the state and district were still behind in math achievement. CPS Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova credited the improvement in reading to investments in tutorial programs, academic interventionists, and teacher coaches, but expressed concerns about maintaining these programs after federal pandemic relief funding expires in September.
