Blue Jackets fans support Patrik Laine with $10K in donations following podcast’s insensitive suicide remark
Columbus Blue Jackets’ forward Patrik Laine received support from fans after an insensitive comment about his mental health was made on a fan podcast. Laine had previously pledged to donate $1,000 for every goal and assist he makes this season to the OhioHealth Foundation’s mental health resources as part of his “Laine Gives Back” initiative. After the podcast’s comment, fans made over 200 donations totaling more than $10,000. Laine’s representative, Octagon Hockey, condemned the podcast’s comment while Laine himself expressed disapproval. The podcast has since apologized and deleted its Twitter account. Laine’s teammate, Johnny Gaudreau, has since pledged to continue the donation initiative in Laine’s absence.
