Azerbaijan and Armenia accused each other of shelling. Baku conducted operation “Retribution”

11

The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan claims that Armenia fired at its positions twice, prompting a response operation known as “Retribution” which involved the destruction of the Armenian military post allegedly responsible for the shelling. In contrast, the Ministry of Defense of Armenia reported that two people were killed and wounded by Azerbaijani forces. These new incidents add to the longstanding tension between the neighboring nations, rooted in the Armenian proclamation of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic on Azerbaijani territory in 1991 and subsequent military skirmishes. The conflict reescalated in 2023 with Baku’s implementation of “local anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh and continued territorial disputes.
