Jeffrey Wright won the award for best lead performance at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for his role in “American Fiction”. In his acceptance speech, he reminisced about attending the Spirit Awards in 1997 and meeting his hero Muhammad Ali. Wright explained that “American Fiction” was an independent film due to lack of initial financing, crediting Ram Bergman and Rian Johnson for supporting the endeavor. The actor acknowledged his co-stars and the movie’s crew during his speech. This was Wright’s first Spirit Awards win, despite two previous nominations.
