Betty Neal, originally from Fayetteville, Ark., moved to Dallas in 1979 and began a lifelong career in activism for the Black and LGBTQ communities. After witnessing the injustices and discrimination her Black friends faced in the Gayborhood, she began focusing on educating herself and her community about these issues, progressively becoming more politically active. She has played significant roles in various organizations and events, including Dallas Black Pride, Dallas Southern Pride, Dallas Pride, Black Tie Dinner, and Black Lesbian Pride. Her advice to young activists is to continue educating themselves about the issues they fight for. Neal remains active in her community, currently focusing on women’s rights and voting rights.
