Philadelphia to Host Navy Week Featuring 75 Visiting Sailors

PHILADELPHIA — The U.S. Navy has announced that Navy Week will be held in Philadelphia, PA from Monday, October 9 through Sunday, October 15, 2023. The event will feature 75 visiting sailors from across the nation who will volunteer throughout the community and engage in discussions about the Navy’s importance to Philadelphia. This will be the first time Philadelphia has hosted Navy Week since 2011.

Navy Week is the Navy’s signature outreach program, aimed at educating citizens about the Navy, its people, and its role in national security and prosperity. The Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO) coordinates Navy Weeks across the U.S. every year.

“We are excited to bring the Navy Week program to Philadelphia,” said NAVCO’s director, Cmdr. Anthony Falvo. “Seapower and America’s Navy are more important now than ever before. The U.S. Navy remains our nation’s most powerful instrument of military influence, and Navy Week allows us to showcase how the Navy serves America at sea, in the air, and ashore.”

Philadelphia, being the birthplace of the U.S. Navy, is honored to welcome back the Navy and its members. Mayor Jim Kenney expressed his gratitude towards the service members and encouraged residents to welcome the Navy to Philadelphia. He also urged everyone to attend the various events throughout the week to celebrate the great work of the U.S. Navy.

During Philadelphia-Camden Navy-Marine Week, the sailors will engage in in-person demonstrations, performances, and educational activities. The events will include senior Navy leaders with ties to Philadelphia, sailors serving on the USS Scranton, performances by the U.S. Navy Band Northeast, educational presentations by the Naval History and Heritage Command and the U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, and STEM presentations by the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command.

In addition to the scheduled events, the sailors will visit iconic locations across the Greater Philadelphia Region, such as running the steps at the Art Museum, performing at the Liberty Bell, and making cheesesteaks at Pat’s King of Steaks. They will also be involved in community service activities at various organizations and locations, including Philabundance, the Cathedral Kitchen, Heroic Gardens, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The Navy Band Northeast will make several appearances across the region, performing at locations such as the Betsy Ross House, the US Mint, the Crescenz VA Medical Center, and the Battleship New Jersey.

Philadelphia area businesses, organizations, community groups, schools, universities, and sports teams interested in participating in Philadelphia-Camden Navy-Marine Week can contact Lt. Omari Faulkner for further information.

Since 2005, the Navy Week program has been the Navy’s primary outreach effort, bringing Navy Weeks to regions without a significant Navy presence. With over 250 Navy Weeks held in more than 80 different U.S. markets, the program has been successful in fostering understanding and appreciation for the Navy and its mission.
